Chris Walker is a Bainbridge Island native who grew up just minutes from the same waters where he now leads the team. He began sailing at a young age through local Parks & Recreation programs, quickly developing both a passion for the sport and a connection to the community. In those early years, he split his days between volunteering with beginner classes and advancing his own skills—famously earning “payment” in king-size candy bars, a reward that cemented his enthusiasm for teaching.

 

That early start evolved into years of coaching and instruction. He went on to teach sailing at Poulsbo Maritime Youth Center and later at Western Washington University, where he worked as a student instructor for both physical education courses and youth camps. After moving to Seattle, he balanced a career as a software engineer with his role as lead instructor at Mount Baker Rowing and Sailing Center. Today, he brings that depth of experience back home as the Bainbridge High School Head Coach.

His love of sailing comes from its versatility. Whether it’s a calm day spent cruising with friends or pushing limits in high winds and challenging conditions, he values the sport’s ability to meet sailors wherever they are. He emphasizes both the technical and strategic aspects of racing—reading the wind, making quick decisions, and working seamlessly with a teammate—while fostering a deep appreciation for time on the water.

As a coach, his philosophy centers on growth, teamwork, and enjoyment. While competition and performance matter, he believes the most meaningful outcomes come from the process: showing up, improving, and building lasting relationships. He strives to create an environment where athletes support one another, develop confidence, and form memories that extend far beyond race results.

Known for his humor as much as his dedication, he brings a lighthearted energy to the team—often keeping sailors on their toes with jokes and unexpected answers. At the same time, he is thoughtful about the challenges of coaching, particularly when guiding a talented and competitive group where opportunities can be limited.

Outside of coaching, he continues to spend as much time on the water as possible, with interests ranging from kiteboarding and kitefoiling to paddleboarding. When on land, he enjoys sci-fi and fantasy novels and time with friends, often at trivia nights or low-stakes movie marathons.

A strong advocate for youth sailing, he is passionate about expanding access to the sport on Bainbridge Island and hopes to grow a program that supports sailors of all experience levels. Having seen firsthand how early opportunities in sailing can shape a life, he is committed to helping the next generation discover where the sport might take them.
